Veg momos is a steamed dumpling with a delicious vegetable filling served with a spicy red chutney or sauce. It is a popular street food of Tibet region. From last few years momos are getting popular in various parts of India.

This recipe consists of steamed green vegetable which makes this recipe tasty, healthy and nutritious all at the same time. Veg momos recipe is one of the most requested among Indian Chinese food recipes. I love to make veg momos at home as it’s an easy peasy process and way better than restaurant style momos

Preparation Time: 20mins  ∏  Cooking Time: 30-40mins  ∏  Servings:14-16 momos

Level:Intermediate (Medium)  ∏  Measurement: 1 Cup ≡ 250 ml ≡ 250gm

Ingredients:

For Dough

  • 1 Cup all purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup water (or as required)
  • 1-2 teaspoon oil
  • Salt as per taste

For Stuffing

  • 1/2 cup grated cauliflower
  • 1/4 cup green beans finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup grated cabbage
  • 1/4 cup grated or chopped carrot
  • 1/4 cup bell pepper(Shimla mirch/capsicum) finely chopped
  • 2-3 teaspoon spring onion finely chopped (optional)
  • 2-3 green chillies finely chopped
  • 6-7 garlic clove finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1 medium size onion finely chopped
  • 1-1/2 teaspoon soya sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper powder
  • 1 teaspoon oil
  • Salt as per taste

How to make Veg Momos:

Step1: Take all purpose flour, salt and a teaspoon of oil in a large bowl. Mix salt well with the  flour then add water in parts and knead a firm dough. Cover the dough and keep it aside for 15-20 minutes.

In the meanwhile we will chop all the vegetables and keep them ready. To reduce the chopping time I have used food processor in pulse mode.

Step2: Heat oil in a thick bottom pan. Then add chopped green chilly, ginger & garlic ,saute it for 2-3 seconds. Add finely chopped onion, saute it for 2-3 minutes then add all the chopped vegetables. Increase the flame to medium-high. Stir- fry all the veggies for 2-3 minutes.

Step3:  Add soy sauce, salt and black pepper. Saute everything for 2-3 minutes on medium-high flame. Turn off the flame. Add spring onion greens and mix well. Check the taste and add more salt, pepper or soya sauce if required. Remove it on a plate and let it cool for 4-5 minutes.

Step4: Roll the dough and divide into equal parts. Make ball of each part and keep them covered. Take each dough ball and roll each dough ball into a thin circle of about 2-3 inch diameter. Try to keep the edges to be thin and the center to be thick. Place 1 or 2 tsp of vegetable stuffing in the center.

Lift one side of the edge and start folding in the same way as we do while stuffing paratha. Join the folds in the centre. Do not press the ends keep them closed yet pointed. Prepare all momos this way and keep them covered under a moist napkin.

Step5: When one batch or 5-6 momos are ready, Take a large pan or steamer add water and let it boil. In a greased steamer plate, place momos keeping space between them so that they won’t touch each other.

Keeping the lid closed steam momos on medium-high flame for about 8-10 minutes. Don’t overdo the steaming, as the dough becomes dense and dry. The steaming time may vary upon the thickness of momos outer layer. When you touch the momos then dough should not feel sticky to you. this means they are done and the momos will have a transparent look. Once done take out the steamer plate and let it sit for 2-3 minutes then remove momos on a plate. Similarly prepare other batch of momos.

Momos are ready. Serve hot vegetable momos with a spicy sauce like Momos chutney, schezwan sauce or chilly sauce. Momos go very well with a spicy sauce.
